Bizarre Foods – Weird Recipes from Back in the Day

Cate’s Garage

I read something last night that was rather disturbing. A friend introduced me to Cate’s Garage.

Yummy!

This site has some nostalgic and somewhat frightening finds that I guess Cate purchases at garage sales. Many of these are old cook books from back in the day that contain very interesting recipes such as Hot in a Bun – which, by the way, serves 48 people.

What “Hot” is, that you can put it in a bun, I don’t think I’ll ever know.

It sounds very sexy though, like, “Baby, I’ll put some ‘hot’ in your buns!” Then again, it appears to be some sort of sausage mixture so I guess that may just be true.

If “Hot” serves 48, that’s one awfully big orgy. Sounds like a party for the whole neighborhood.

However, the best of those that I came across, I think, would be the Iceberg Ring topped with tuna salad.

St. Louis Restaurants and Dining

How about a side of Jellied Chicken or Jellied Boullion with Frankfurters to go with your Hot in a Bun?

What IS This?

The people at St. Louis’ Restaurants and Dining decided that it wasn’t enough to read about some of these crazy recipes, they had to be made.

And make them they did!

I guess St. Louis has some very adventurous people. Then again…Some of those recipes don’t actually (perish the thought) sound so bad.

One of them is a creamy sauce made of cream of celery soup with melted Gruyere cheese. I’d actually venture to try that.

There are 20 weird recipes on there that they whipped up and photographed. Yum-O.

The Retro Table

Found another person who can’t control their curiosity. Just had to whip up some of the old, weird recipes.

Care for an Eyeball Sandwich?

You can find Eyeball Sandwiches, Onions Au Gratin, and Tossed Lettuce Salad.

Really? “Tossed Lettuce Salad”?

What next, “Scrambled Egg Omelet”?

She (I assume it’s a she) only has a few recipes, but she whipped them up and discusses the adventure as well.

I don’t know about you, but I’m fine with leaving the experimenting up to someone else.

I like a good pickle, maybe even with ham (the “Eyeball Sandwich”), but I seriously wouldn’t feel comfortable eating a food with that name.

Remember Indiana Jones? *Shudder*

Candy Boots

Even Weight Waters got in on it back in the old days.

It’s so…Inspiring!

They apparently had plenty of recipe cards detailing some old, bizarre recipes that they expected people to make.

Geez, how many people WERE making those recipes?

Our first course is “Inspiration Soup”, followed by “Caucasian Shash” and to cleanse your palate afterward, we’ll finish up with a delightful “Jellied Tomato Refresh“.

Even if you’re on a diet, you shouldn’t deprive yourself. For an indulgent treat, we’ll have “Fluffy Mackerel Pudding” for dessert.

Even worse, could you imagine paying for the Weight Watchers system only to get recipes like those? I know I’d feel a little let down, to say the very least.

I don’t know what fad dieting was like back in those days, but I’m sure our fad diets will be just as crazy to future generations.

I’d say “how can someone possibly like that?” but – how can people eat cabbage soup days in a row? I just don’t know.

Are there any dieting fads, bizarre foods, or weird recipes that maybe you’ve tried and liked? Do share!
